Descendants of John Sikes of Norfolk, VA

This is an update to, and extension of, the work presented by Dennis Maguire in March of 2000, to document the immigrant Sikes / Sykes ancestors into the southern states.  Although more individuals and families have been discovered and documented, there is still a lot of work to be done.  Many of the families in the later generations are very incomplete, as only those family members who have been completely documented and proven are included here. 

Anyone who has additional information or documentation to the data in this report, or to any of the families presented here or their descendants, is asked to contact me.  As Dennis said in 2000, “If we can document and put together these early families, everything else will go much easier to provide a written record of Sikes / Sykes lineages for posterity.”    Otis Sikes

     1.  Male1 Sikes was born ca 1590 in prob England.  He married Unknown.

       2.  Female2 Sikes (Male1) was born ca 1615.  She married Unknown Costen.

     4         i.  Walter3 Costen, born ca 1640 in VA; died 1694 in Norfolk Co, VA.

  Walter Costen was born about 1640 VA

He signed a will on 7 Jun 1688 in Norfolk Co,  VA. Will  witnesses;  Thomas Butt. John Weston, and Mary Linton.  Gave land to John Gammon Sr. on Costen's island. Had land adjoining John Edmonds. He died in 1694 in Norfolk Co. VA,; estate probated on 15 May 1694 in Norfolk Co, VA. Lived on an island at Great Bridge on Elizabeth River known by the name of Hickory Knowle, which he bequeathed to his cousin, Walter Sikes Sr. and Walter Sikes' sons, John, Walter Jr., Thomas, and Costen Sikes.


     3.  John2 Sikes (Male1) was born ca 1615 in prob England.

John Sikes was born about 1615 in Eng. He immigrated in 1637 to Virginia.  A land patent  in Upper County, New Norfolk, was granted to Thomas Sawyer for transport of five persons, including John Sikes about May 1637 ( VA Magazine of History, v6, p193).

1637 Bought 300 ac in upper Norfolk on East Branch of Elizabeth River, VA.

1642: John Sikes; 746 ac in Isle of Wight Co., VA

     6        ii.  William Sikes, born ca 1648 in Isle of Wight Co, VA; died 28 Oct 1697 in Isle of Wight Co, VA.

+   7        iii.  Thomas Sikes, born ca 1646 in of Isle of Wight, VA; died Bef. 09 Aug 1708 in Isle of Wight, VA.

Generation No. 3

     5.  Walter3 Sikes, Sr. (John2, Male1) was born ca 1645 in of Norfolk Co., VA, and died 1709 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Jane Biggs 01 Sep 1674 in Norfolk Co, VA.  She was born ca 1659 in Norfolk Co, VA, and died Aft. 15 Dec 1721 in Norfolk Co, VA. 

   Walter Sikes Sr. was born about 1645 in of Norfolk Co, VA.

13 Aug 1679 - V4, p75 Norfolk VA - Registration of marks of John Sikes and Walter Sikes, both sons of Walter Sikes.  This conflicts with the proported birth years of his sons John and Walter, so more research is required to determine if they are the sons of Jane Biggs, or if the years of her birth and marriage are incorrect, or if they were from an earlier wife of Walter Sikes Sr.

He signed a will on 9 Nov 1709 in Norfolk Co, VA.  Bk 8, #142: Will witnessed by Henry Shaller, John White, and Henry Butt.  He died before 15 May 1710 in Norfolk Co, VA. He had an estate probated on 15 May 1710 in Norfolk Co, VA.

1704 Virginia  Quit Rent Roll: 550 ac Norfolk Co.

He was married to Jeane/Jane BIGGS (daughter of John Biggs Sr and Johanna Sawyer) on 4 Sep 1674 in Norfolk Co. VA.  Jeane/Jane Biggs was born about 1659 in Norfolk Co, VA. She died after 15 Dec 1721 in Norfolk Co. VA.

She was married to John Smith,brother of James Sikes' wife Mary Smith  (son of John Henry Smith and Mary Foreman) prob. in Norfolk Co., VA. 

John Smith signed a will on 2 Sep 1718 in Norfolk Co., VA.  He died after 2 Sep 1718 in Norfolk Co., VA .

 Will witnesses; William Foreman, John Fife, and William Sikes. 

Will executor brother-in-law James Sikes.  He had an estate probated on 20 Mar 1719 in Norfolk Co., VA.
 


     7.  Thomas3 Sikes (John2, Male1) was born ca 1646 in of Isle of Wight, VA, and died Bef. 09 Aug 1708 in Isle of Wight, VA.  He married (1) Jane Cullen.  She died Bef. 1705 in Isle of Wight, VA.  He married (2) Elizabeth Hampton 09 Dec 1705 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. 

Thomas Sikes was born about 1646 in of Isle of Wight Co. VA.  It is believed that this Thomas Sikes was the son of John Sikes, but complete evidence has not been presented.  Any information will be appreciated.

     He signed a will on 29 Apr 1708 in Isle of Wight Co. VA listing wife Elizabeth and children Thomas, Elizabeth, John, and Mary; bk 2; pg 491.  He died after 29 Apr 1708 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He had an estate probated on 9 Aug 1708 in Norfolk Co, VA.

Possibly same Thomas Sikes who bought 1839 ac in Charles City Co, VA in Weyanoak Parish.

1687, Warwick Co. VA, 264 ac of land near head of Black Swamp.

     Thomas reportedly first married Jane Cullen, daughter of Thomas Cullen.  On Oct 20, 1689 Thomas SIkes and two others requested administration of the estate of Thomas Cullen, who died intestate.

     Thomas married Elizabeth Hampton, widow of Thomas Hampton, on Dec 9, 1705.  She was the daughter of Francis and Mary Bridell.

Generation No. 4

     8.  James4 Sikes (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1676 in VA, and died Bef. 20 Aug 1742 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Mary Smith ca 1713 in Norfolk Co, VA.  She was born ca 1690 in of Norfolk Co., VA.

       James Sikes was born in 1676 in Norfolk Co, VA

     Appears on Norfolk VA Titheables lists for 1730 - 1736, with the entries for 1735 and 1736 being James Sikes and son Jesse.

     He was married to Mary Smith (daughter of John Henry Smith and Mary Foreman) about 1713 in Norfolk Co., VA.  Prob. Mary Smith was born about 1690 in of Norfolk Co., VA.  She had brothers; John and Richard; per John Smith will.

     James Sikes signed a will on 20 May 1742 in Norfolk Co, VA, and his estate was probated on 20 Aug 1742 in Norfolk Co. VA.  James Sikes will listed wife Mary, sons Jesse, Jacob, James, Jonas, and Joab, and daughters Abigail Taylor and Mary Sikes.

Children of James Sikes and Mary Smith are:

+   22       i.  James5 Sikes, Sr, born ca 1710 in VA or NC; died Aft. 06 Feb 1779 in prob Halifax Co., NC.

+   23       ii.  Jacob Sikes, born 1712 in VA.

+   24      iii.  Jesse Sikes, Sr., born 1713 in VA; died Aft. 02 Nov 1772 in Norfolk Co., VA.

+   25      iv.  Jonas Sikes, Sr., born 1715 in VA; died ca 1784 in Prob Halifax Co, VA.

     26      v.  Joab Sikes, born ca 1718 in Norfolk Co, VA; died Aft. 1742.

    Joab Sikes is mentioned in the will of his father, dated 20 May 1742, but there is no indication as to whether or not he resided in Norfolk VA.  He is not noted in the 1730-1736, or 1750-1780 titheables lists, nor in any Norfolk Co. deeds located so far.

     27 vi. Abigail Sikes, born ca 1720 in VA.

     28 vii. Mary Sikes, born ca 1722 in Norfolk Co, VA.


     9.  John4 Sikes (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1681 in VA, and died Bef. 21 Aug 1719 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Sarah ?Harlan?. 

John Sikes was born about 1681 in Norfolk Co., VA.

13 Aug 1679 - V4, p75 Norfolk, VA - Registration of marks of John Sikes and Walter Sikes, both sons of Walter Sikes.  This indicates that the date of John's birth must be earlier than 1681. More research is needed.

Will of Walter Costen bk 5, p220, written 7 Jun 1688 bequeaths the land that John's parents, Walter and Jane Sikes, live on to John, with the notation that John is not yet 21.

He died before 21 Aug 1719 in Norfolk Co., VA.  He had an estate probated on 21 Aug 1719 in Norfolk Co., VA.  Will witnessed by Joseph Sikes and J. Fife. 

John and Sarah Sikes, wife, with his parents, Walter and Jane Sikes, sell land to George Suggs [deed bk 6, pg 250] 1704; Virginia Quit Rent Rolls; 200 ac.,  Norfolk Co. VA.

Notes for Sarah ?Harlan?:

     Deed dated May 12, 1708 John Sikes of Southern Branch of Elizabeth River to Costen Sikes of same. 21 pounds for 100 acres.  Part of division of land given to his wife Sarah by/from John Harlan(?).  Land is plantation John lived on and is now in possession of Costen.  Signed Jno (his mark) Sikes, Sarah Sikes.  Wit: Walter (his mark) Sikes, Jun.

     From this it appears that Sarah is the daughter of John Harlan, but it is not complete proof.

Children of John Sikes and Sarah ?Harlan? are:

+   29       i.  John5 Sikes, born 1708 in VA; died ca 1758 in VA.

+   30       ii.  Solomon Sikes, Sr, born 1709 in VA; died Aft. 1780 in prob Norfolk Co., VA.

     31      iii.  William Sikes, born ca 1711 in Norfolk Co, VA.

    1730 Norfolk titheables list indicates two William Sikes, one of which is listed with Henry Smith, and is assumed to be William 1690VA, whose brother James 1676VA married the daughter of Henry Smith.  The other William Sikes in the 1730 and 1731 titheables list may be William, son of John, but it is uncertain.

    There are two William Sikes in the 1732 list, but they are listed as William Sikes and William Sikes, Jr., and the same for 1733.  In 1736 the listing is for William Sikes and son Josiah.

    In summary, this William Sikes may be the one listed for 1730 and possibly for 1731, but probably is not one of the William Sikes listed after that.

     32 iv. Sarah Sikes, born ca 1713 in Norfolk Co, VA.

     33 v.  Ann Sikes, born ca 1715 in Norfolk Co, VA.

     34 vi. Grace Sikes, born ca 1718 in Norfolk Co, VA.

     35 vii. Unborn Sikes, born ca 1720 in Norfolk Co, VA.

Notes for Unborn Sikes:

    The will of John Sikes, proved 21 Aug 1719 divides his lands between his sons John, Solomon and William, but with the provision "But if Case the Unborn Child which my wife Goes with Be a boy to have a Equall part of the beforemention'd Land".  To date no information is known as to whether this child was male or female, but it must also be noted that it is unknown as to the final disposition of John's lands.

 

     10.  Thomas4 Sikes (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1682 in VA, and died Aft. 12 Feb 1738/39 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Mary Taylor ca 1708 in Norfolk Co, VA. 

Thomas Sikes was born about 1682 in Norfolk Co., VA.

     He was married to Mary Taylor (daughter of Theodore Taylor and Ann    ?  ) prob. before 1708 in Norfolk Co., VA;   It is possible that her name was Mercy or Marecy, as a deed dated Feb 16, 1716 (V9, p558, Norfolk, VA) lists Thomas and Mercey Sikes selling 25 acres in Cypress Swamp, and their daughter's name was listed as Marecy in Thomas's will.

18 Apr 1718; Sarah Crawley and Eliza Jones, two orphan girls are bound over to Thomas Sikes and his wife, Mary.

1730 - 1736; Thomas Sikes shown as tithable. 1731 Thomas and son (not named).  1736 Thomas and son Jeremiah.

He signed a will on 12 Feb 1738/39 in Norfolk Co., VA.  Will witnesses; James Hodges, John Gammon, and William Nicholson.  Son Jeremiah Sikes appointed as Executor.

Will mentions daughter Sara Maning and grandsons Thos.  and Jonathan Maning, daughter Marecy Taylor and Granddaughter Elizabeth Taylor, daughter Alice Creekmur and grandson Joshua Creekmur, daughter Anne Sikes, and son Jeremiah Sikes.

 He died after 12 Feb 1738/39 in Norfolk Co., VA and had an estate probated on 16 Mar 1738/39 in Norfolk Co., VA.  

Children of Thomas Sikes and Mary Taylor are:

+   36       i.  Sarah5 Sikes, born ca 1710 in VA.

+   37       ii.  Marcey Sikes, born ca 1711 in VA.

+   38      iii.  Alice Sikes, born ca 1713 in VA.

     39      iv.  Jeremiah Sikes, born ca 1715 in VA; died 1788 in Norfolk Co., VA.  He married Hannah.

Notes for Jeremiah Sikes:

Will - Norfolk Co., VA   6 Jun 1788, recorded 15 Jan 1789 leaves use of land to wife Hannah for rest of her life, then the land shall go to William Creadle Maning and Alexander Creadle.  Wit: John Bulley, Haner Nichols, Dorkis Maning  No children listed or known.

     40 v.  Anne Sikes, born ca 1717 in VA.

 

    11.  Walter4 Sikes, Jr. (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1683 in Norfolk Co., VA, and died ca 1730 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Elizabeth Unknown. 

Walter Sikes, Jr. was born abt 1663 in Norfolk Co., VA.

13 Aug 1679 - V4, p75 Norfolk VA - Registration of marks of John Sikes and Walter Sikes, both sons of Walter Sikes.  This indicates that the date of Walter's birth must have been earlier than 1683.  More research is needed.

Deeds of Norfolk VA indicate land transactions by Walter betwen 1704 and 1725, and he witnessed a deed on 15 Jul 1726. 

He died between 1725 and 1730 in Norfolk Co., VA.  

1734, 1735; a Walter Sikes shown as tithable.  Is this the same Walter?

Child of Walter Sikes and Elizabeth Unknown is:

     12.  Costen4 Sikes (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1685 in VA, and died 1719 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Katherine Unknown Bef. 1711. 

Child of Costen Sikes and Katherine Unknown is:

     42       i.  Frances5 Sikes, born ca 1708 in Norfolk Co, VA; died Aft. 1734.

Notes for Frances Sikes:

    Deed dated Sept 14, 1734 - Frances Sikes, only daughter of Costen Sikes, to John Hodges. 25 acres of land that said dec'd father lived on, bounded between land of John and Solomon Sikes, above Southern Branch Great Bridge.

 

     13.  Jane4 Sikes (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1688 in VA.  She married Robert Gammon ca 1710 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He died Aft. 14 Jan 1717/18 in Norfolk Co, VA.

Children of Jane Sikes and Robert Gammon are:

     43       i.  John5 Gammon, born in Norfolk Co, VA.

     44       ii.  Jane Gammon, born in Norfolk Co, VA.

     15.  William4 Sikes, Sr (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1690 in Norfolk Co, VA, and died ca 1772 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Dorothy. 

He signed a will on 8 Mar 1771 in Norfolk Co., VA.

 He died between 8 Mar 1771 and Feb 1772, when his estate was probated  in Norfolk Co., VA.

 12 Nov 1719; collects bounty for wolfs head and is in Norfolk Co., VA as late as 1741.

Appears on Norfolk titheables list through 1771.

He was married to Dorothy   ?     about 1711 in Norfolk Co., VA 

Children of William Sikes and Dorothy are:

     49       i.  Dorothy5 Sikes, born 1712 in VA.  She married Unknown Curling.

     50       ii.  Mary Sikes, born ca 1715 in Norfolk Co, VA.

     51      iii.  Josiah Sikes, born ca 1720 in VA.

Notes for Josiah Sikes:

    No definitive record of this Josiah Sikes has been found in Norfolk Co., VA.

     52 iv. Ruth Sikes, born 1720 in VA.  She married Unknown Gammon.

     53 v.  Henry Sikes, born ca 1725 in Norfolk Co, VA; died Aft. 1784.

Notes for Henry Sikes:

    Henry Sikes appears on Norfolk Co. VA titheables list from 1750 until 1774.  It is believed that he moved to Halifax Co. NC between 1774 and 1777.

    May 18, 1774 Henry Sikes & wife Sarah sell 150 acres in Norfolk VA to James Halstead for 50 pounds, at a place commonly known as Folk. 

    Henry Sikes appears on the Halifax Co. NC tax list 1782, 1783, 1784.

     54 vi. Lydia Sikes, born ca 1725 in Norfolk Co, VA.

+   55 vii. Joel Sikes, Sr., born ca 1729 in Prob Norfolk Co., VA; died Aft. 15 Jul 1794 in Prob Halifax Co., NC.

     56 viii.    Nathaniel Sikes, born ca 1729 in Norfolk Co, VA.

    Nathaniel Sikes first appears on the Norfolk VA titheables list in 1750, as William Sikes and sons Nathaniel and William.  He does not appear on the titheables after 1751, and it is unknown if he is the Nathaniel Sikes who is shown on the Halifax Co., NC tax lists in 1782 and afterwards.  More research is needed.

     57 ix. William Sikes, born ca 1729 in Norfolk Co, VA; died Aft. 30 Jan 1788 in prob Halifax Co., NC.

    William Sikes first appears on the Norfolk VA titheables list in 1750, shown as William Sikes and sons Nathaniel and William.  He is shown on the titheables list through 1774, and it is believed that he then moved to Halifax Co., NC along with his brothers and other Sikes families. 

    Deed dated Jan 30, 1788 William and Henry Sikes, now of Halifax Co., NC are selling 50 acres believed to have belonged to their father William Sikes, now deceased.  Sale is to Joel Gammon, land bounded by Jesse Hankbury, Daniel Hodges, Daniel Seville, Thomas Nichols, William Nichols and John Gilcrest (dec'd).  Wit: Cortney Sikes

    One or more William Sikes appears on the Halifax Co., NC tax lists through 1790, and it is believed that the one who appears on the 1790 list is this William Sikes.

     58 x.  Jane Sikes, born ca 1730 in Norfolk Co, VA.

 

     16.  Joseph4 Sikes, Sr. (Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1692 in VA, and died ca 1759 in Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Isabella Creekmour ca 1730 in Norfolk Co, VA. 

He signed a will on 30 Aug 1754 in Norfolk Co., VA.  He died about 1759 in Norfolk Co., VA.  He had an estate probated in May 1759 in Norfolk Co., VA, listing sons Thomas, Willis, Joseph and Malachi and wife Isabella.

21 Dec 1722, James Gammon petitions court to have Joseph Sikes as his legal guardian - He is of lawful age to make choice; court orders, 1719/1723, pg 52a. 

1730 - 1735; Joseph Sikes shown as tithable.

1750 - 1756 Joseph Sikes shown as titheable, but not in 1757 or thereafter.  1758 tax rolls are not available, but in 1759 Isbell Sikes paid for sons Thos, Joseph, Willis and Malachi.

 He was married to Isabella Creekmour (daughter of Edward Creekmour and Mary    ?  ) about 1730 in Norfolk Co., VA. 

Surname of Mary ? could be Gammon.

Notes for Isabella Creekmour:

 Isabella Creekmour Sikes died after 26 Sep 1761 in Norfolk Co., VA.  She was born in Norfolk City, VA.

Notes for Thomas Sikes:

    Thomas Sikes appears on the 1750 through 1780 Norfolk Va titheables list, and is probably the Thomas Sikes who appears on the 1790-1794 Norfolk tax list.  In 1790 a Thomas Sikes is shown as head of a household with four white individuals.

Notes for Malachi Sikes:

    Malachi Sikes is first listed on the Norfolk VA titheables in 1756, shown as Joseph Sikes and sons Willis and Malachi.  He is shown on the titheables through the end of that series in 1780, but is not shown on the 1791 and after series. 

 

     19.  Thomas4 Sikes, Sr. (Thomas3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1680 in Isle of Wight Co., VA, and died Aft. 19 Jan 1729/30 in Isle of Wight Co, VA.  He married Elizabeth Gayle ca 1717 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.  She was born Bef. 1700 in Isle of Wight Co, VA.

 Thomas Sikes, Sr. was born about 1680 in of Isle of Wight Co., VA.

He signed a will on 19 Jan 1730 in Isle of Wight Co., VA; bk 3, pg 254. 

He died after 19 Jan 1730 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.  He had an estate probated on 22 Mar 1730 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.

He was married to Elizabeth Gayle (daughter of Thomas Gayle, born 1650, and Alice    ?   ) about 1717 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.

     James Sikes is shown on Norfolk VA titheables list beginning in 1750, with the last entry being in 1774.  It is believed that he then moved to Halifax Co. NC with his sons Nathan, Joab and Jacob. 

     He signed a will on 6 Feb 1779 in Halifax Co, NC, listing his wife Sarah and the sons who were in Halifax NC, plus Daniel Sikes.

    Nathan Sikes only  apears in the Norfolk VA titheables list series of 1750-1780 in 1774, as James Sr. and son Nathan.  A Nathan Sikes does appear in the 1791 and 1792 lists as one white male, owning one horse.  He does not appear after that.

    It is unclear if he moved to Halifax Co. NC with his father around 1777,  although there is are tax listings for one and two Nathan or Nathaniel Sikes in the years of 1782 - 1788 for Halifax NC taxes. 

    Jun 24, 1783  Nathan Sikes to Thomas Williams, Norfolk VA. 100 acres for 135 pounds.  Land was left to Nathan by his father James Sikes.

    Joab Sikes is listed in the will of his father James Sikes of Halifax Co., NC, where it is noted that he is not yet 21 as of 6 Feb 1799.

     From deed V27, p26, dated 20 Mar 1775 it appears that Jacob and his son Henry were then living in Craven Co., NC.  This matches the disappearance of Jacob from the Titheables Roll of Norfolk Co, VA, in which he appears from 1750 - 1765, but not thereafter.  Deeds in Norfolk Co. VA in March of 1799 appear to indicate that Jacob has moved back to Norfolk from Craven Co., NC.

     Jonas and Jacob paid their taxes together  in 1750 and 1751 on the Norfolk VA Titheables List, but Jonas is not found in the Norfolk records after that.  Currently it is unknown if he then moved to Halifax Co. VA, where his will was filed in 1784.

     Jonas Sr. wrote a will dated 31 Dec 1782 which was recorded on 16 Dec 1784 in Halifax Co, VA.  It listed his wife, Elizabeth, and sons Thomas Aldridge, Jonas Jr., Joab, and Asaal, and daughters Maryann, Sarah Hill, Elizabeth, and Tabith Hill.

     John appears on the 1730-1736 and 1850-1757 Norfolk titheables lists.

5 May 1755, John Sikes purchases 89 acres from John Gammon.  John leaves this land in his will to his sons Stephen and John.

     Solomon Sikes, Sr appears on the Norfolk titheables lists in 1730, 1732, and 1734-1736, and then in the second list from 1750 - 1780.  He does not appear on the third list beginning in 1790, so it is assumed that he died between 1780 and 1790.

     A deed dated Jan 21, 1775 mentions line of Solomon Sikes, Sr., in St Brides Parish as a boundry line of land, but no deed has been found to describe the land that Solomon owned.

    A Solomon Sikes signed a will on 10 Sept 1785 (Bk 1, p 66) in Princess Anne Co., VA, listing as children sons Asa, Simon, Levi, and Elias, and daughter Sarah.  It is currently unproven that this was Solomon Sikes, Jr., although it would appear to be.

     The lineage of this Walter Sikes is currently unproven, although it is thought that he is a descendant of one of the Norfolk Sikes families.  He is included here as a son of Walter Sikes, even though there is as of yet no proof that this is true, but so as to not lose his linkage to the Sikes of Norfolk Co., VA. 

     A Walter Sikes is shown as titheable in 1734 and 1735.  Unknown if it is this Walter Sikes, or the Walter Sikes that he has been attached to in this tree.

     Walter Sikes shown as titheable in 1753, and thereafter until he moved to Halifax Co., NC somewhere after 1774 with his son Lemuel and other Sikes families.

     18 Aug 1756, Walter Sikes sold 40 acres of land.  The mark used to sign the deed is not the same as the Walter Sikes he has been attached to, and is fairly certain proof that they are not the same individual.  Walter Sikes appears in other land transactions in Norfolk Va until 1772, and on 6 Apr 1785 Walter Sikes of Halifax Co., NC sold 75 acres in Norfolk Co. VA, witnessed by Walter Sikes, Jr., Walter Sikes younger, and John Purdy, all of Norfolk Co., VA.

     He appears on the Halifax Co. NC tax lists in 1784 - 1786.  The 1784 entry lists Walter as "aged and infirm".  He does not appear after 1786.

    Walter first appears on the Norfolk titheables list in 1756, so it is assumed that he turned 16 in either 1755 or 1756.  He is shown on the titheables list through 1778.  A Walter Sikes is shown on the reconstructed 1790 Norfolk census as head of a household with 4 white individuals, but does not appear on the tax lists of 1791 and after.

    Will of Sarah Taylor written 7 May 1782 includes a legacy to Lyddia Sikes, wife to Walter Sikes, Junr.  It is doubtful that Lyddia was the daughter of Sarah Taylor, but rather a friend or other relative.

    Lemuel first appears in Norfolk VA on the 1761 titheables list as Walter Sikes and sons Walter and Lemuel.  The 1760 titheables are missing, so he could have turned 16 in 1760 rather than in 1761.

    Lemuel is last shown on the Norfolk titheables list in 1774, and moved with his father Walter and other Sikes families to Halifax Co., NC.

    Lemuel is shown on the Halifax NC tax lists from the beginning list of 1782 through 1786.  It is believed that he then moved to Cumberland Co., NC, where he is shown on the 1790 census as head of a household of one male and five females.  He does not appear on the 1800 Cumberland NC census.

    Thomas Sikes only appears on the 1767 Norfolk titheables list, when he is shown as Walter Sikes Senr and sons Roger and Thomas.  It is unknown if Roger and Thomas were twins, although it appears that they both turned 16 in 1767.  Roger Sikes does not appear in any records except for this 1767 titheables list, but it is unknown whether he moved away at an early age or died before 1768.

 

     55.  Joel5 Sikes, Sr. (William4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1729 in Prob Norfolk Co., VA, and died Aft. 15 Jul 1794 in Prob Halifax Co., NC.

    Halifax Co. NC tax list of 1783, where he is listed as Joel Sikes, Jr, single with no property, is only known record.  The only other indication that there is a Joel, Jr.  is in a deed of his father (15 Jul 1794) with the notation of Joel Sikes, Sr.   He does not appear on any succeeding tax lists, although the 1800 census does show a Joel Sikes who is the only occupant of a household with one male 26-45.  This could be Joel Jr, although it also could be Joel Sr, with a mis-marked age range on the census.

     112    iv. James Sikes, born ca 1760 in Norfolk Co., VA; died Aft. 19 Oct 1832 in prob Lincoln Co., TN.

    On his application for a Revolutionary War pension, dated 19 Oct 1832 in Lincoln Co., TN,  James stated that he was born 1760 or 1762 in Norfolk Co., VA, and moved with his father and family to Halifax Co. NC when he was 12 or 13.  He lived there at enlistment, then afterward moved to Orange Co., NC for 20 or 30 years, then moved to east TN, then to Lincoln Co., TN.  There was no spouse listed and no children listed on the pension application, although the census entry for 1820 Lincoln Co., TN indicates that he was head of a household containing 2 males and 2 females.

 

     60.  Joseph5 Sikes, Jr. (Joseph4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1735 in Norfolk Co, VA, and died Aft. 1807 in prob Norfolk Co., VA.  He married Unknown Hodges. 

     Joseph Sikes, Jr. first appears on the Norfolk VA titheables list in 1751 as Joseph Sikes and son Joseph.  He is shown on this list through 1780, and on the next tax series through 1807.  In 1790 he is shown as head of a household with 7 white individuals, but has not been found so far on the 1800 census.  In 1795 he is listed as Joseph Sikes, Sr, and the next Joseph Sikes Jr is also first listed that year.

     A deed in Norfolk Co., VA filed around 1800/1801 indicates that Joseph Sikes Sr, his daughters Aby and Isabel, and son Lemuel Sikes all give Joseph Sikes Jr. a Negro boy named Charlie.  The deed also indicates that Joseph Sr's wife was the daughter of John Hodges, but her name was not given.

     Willis Sikes first appears on the Norfolk VA titheables list in 1754, listed as Joseph Sikes and sons Joseph and Willis.  He is shown on the titheables list through 1780, and then on the Norfolk tax lists from 1791 through 1803.  In the reconstructed census of 1790 a Willis Sikes is shown as head of a household with 4 white individuals, but this could be his son, Willis Jr.  Neither Willis Sikes has yet been found on the 1800 census.

     Josiah Sr signed a will on 27 Oct 1792, recorded 20 Oct 1794, naming his wife Sarah, sons William, Josiah and Frederick, and daughters Elizabeth, Nancy, Sally, and Rebekah.  Wife Sarah and son William named executors.

Children of Josiah Sikes and Sarah Unknown are:

     120      i.  William7 Sikes, born ca 1764 in Prob Norfolk Co, VA.

    William first appears in the Norfolk Co. VA tax list in 1794, which was the year of his father's death. He appears from then through 1807 and does not appear on the 1810 census. 

     He is the executor of his father's will (along with his mother Sarah), so he may be the eldest son, and is probably above 21 at the time Josiah, Sr. wrote his will on 27 Oct 1792.

     121    ii.  Josiah Sikes, Jr, born ca 1758 in prob Norfolk Co., VA.

    Josiah Jr first appears on the Norfolk titheables list in 1774 through 1780, and then on the tax list from 1790 through 1811.  On the reconstructed census of 1790 he is shown as head of a household with 5 white individuals.  He is listed as head of household in 1810 census, with one male and female child under the age of 10, one male 26-44, and one female 16-26.

     122    iii. Frederick Sikes, born Aft. 1764.

    A Frederick Sikes appears on the Norfolk VA tax lists from 1802 through 1812 , and appears in the 1810 census of Norfolk VA.  However, it is unclear if this is the same Frederick named in the will of Josiah Sikes, Sr, dated 1792.

     123    iv. Elizabeth Sikes.

     124    v.  Sally Sikes.

     125    vi. Euphan Sikes.

     126    vii. Rebekah Sikes.


     80.  Jesse6 Sikes, Jr. (Jesse5, James4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born Bet. 1746 - 1748 in Prob Norfolk Co, VA, and died ca 1804 in Prob Norfolk Co, VA.  He married Elizabeth Unknown.  She died ca 1812.

     Jesse Sikes Jr first appears in the Norfolk VA titheables list in 1765 with his father and brother, listed as Jesse Sikes and sons Josiah and Jesse.  He appears through the 1780 list, and then is also included on the 1790 - 1803 Norfolk tax list.  In 1796 and afterwards he is listed as Jesse Sikes, Sr., so it would appear that he had a son named Jesse.

Notes for Elizabeth Unknown:

     Elizabeth appears on the Norfolk VA tax lists after her husband died in 1804, and is shown there through 1811, with  two white males over the age of 16 in the household in 1804 and one each year after that.

     127      i.  Jesse7 Sikes, Jr, born ca 1780 in Prob Norfolk Co, VA.

 

     81.  Caleb6 Sikes (Jesse5, James4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1750 in prob Norfolk Co., VA.

     Caleb Sikes first apears in the Norfolk titheables list in 1766, listed as Jesse Sikes and sons Jesse and Caleb.  He appears in the titheables list through 1780, and then is listed in the Norfolk tax lists from 1791 through 1811, but he is not enumerated on the 1810 Norfolk census.  In 1803 he is listed as Caleb Sikes, Sr, and Caleb Sikes, Jr is also listed.

Child of Caleb Sikes is:

     128      i.  Caleb7 Sikes, Jr, born ca 1787 in prob Norfolk Co., VA.

 

     84.  Thomas Aldridge6 Sikes (Jonas5, James4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1760 in VA, and died 05 Sep 1835 in Prob Rutherford Co., TN.  He married Sarah Willis 28 Oct 1783 in Lunenburg Co., VA.  She was born ca 1761 in Prob Lunenburg Co., VA.

     Georgia Genealogical Magazine v95, p26 - Thomas A Sykes entered Oglethorpe Co, GA Revolutionary War Soldiers land lottery.  v123, p17 - Thomas Ald Sikes witnessed deed in Olgethorpe Co, GA on 22 June 1795.

     On his Revolutionary War pension application, filed on 19 May 1820 in Rutherford Co. TN, Thomas A. Sikes stated that he was 60, with a wife Sarah aged 60 and 2 daughters at home, Rebeccah aged 20 and Mary aged 24.  His widow applied for a widow's pension in Bedford Co., TN, after his death, and listed their children and their birth dates.

     130     ii.  Jesse Sikes, born 13 Oct 1787.

     131    iii.  Susanna Sikes, born 10 Apr 1789.

     133     v.  Jonas Sikes, born 03 Jul 1793.

     134    vi.  Nancy Sikes, born 05 Jul 1795.

     135   vii.  John Sikes, born 25 Aug 1797.

     136  viii.  Mary Sikes, born 25 Aug 1797.

     137    ix.  Robert Sikes, born 16 Oct 1799.

 

     96.  Trimigan6 Sikes (John5, John4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1754 in Prob Norfolk Co, VA.

     Trimigan Sikes first appears on the Norfolk titheables list in 1770 (shown as Lott and brother Trimigan in both 1770 and 1771).  Trimigan appears on the titheables list through 1780, and then on the 1791-1812 list in entirety.  He is shown on the reconstructed 1790 census as head of a household of 4 individuals, but is not enumerated in the 1800 Norfolk VA census. 

Child of Trimigan Sikes is:

     138      i.  Jesse7 Sikes, born ca 1782.

         Jesse Sikes appears on the 1797 Norfolk tax list as Jesse (of Trim).  He is not identified after that.

 

     109.  Joshua6 Sikes, Sr (Joel5, William4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1749 in Norfolk Co., VA, and died 10 Feb 1823 in Smith Co, TN.  He married Ann Morris ca 1779 in prob Halifax Co., NC, daughter of George Morris.  She was born ca 1765 in prob Halifax Co., NC, and died 1818 in Smith Co., TN.

     Norfolk VA Titheables List 1765 - 1774 as Joel Sikes and son Joshua

     Believed to have moved to Halifax Co. NC around 1777 with his father and other Sikes families.  Appears on Halifax Co., NC tax lists from 1782 through 1802 (the last year of the existing records).  He sold his land in Halifax Co., NC in 1807, and is believed that he then moved to TN at that time. 

     Children listed are from will of Joshua Sikes, Sr, filed in court Feb 1823, Smith Co, TN.  Also, all of the children named signed a deed transferring land in Halifax Co, NC, which had been inherited by their mother, Anne Morris Sikes, from her father, George Morris.

Children of Joshua Sikes and Ann Morris are:

     139      i.  William M.7 Sikes, born ca 1780 in Halifax Co., NC.

     140     ii.  Elizabeth Sikes, born ca 1781 in Halifax Co., NC.  She married John Parker.

     141    iii.  Terrell Sikes, born ca 1783 in Halifax Co., NC.

    First notation of Terrell Sikes is in tax records of Davidson Co., Tn in 1811.  He first apears in the Smith Co. Tn tax records in 1816, and probably moved to Obion Co., TN before 1820, where the last record of him is found in the late 1830's.  No known marriage or children.

     142    iv. Joshua Sikes, Jr, born ca 1785 in Halifax Co, NC; died Aft. 1850 in Smith Co, TN.  He married Leodicia Mangum Gwaltney 1830; born ca 1783 in Isle of Wight, VA; died 1848 in Smith Co, TN.

    Joshua, Jr. first appears in the tax records of Davidson Co., TN in 1811, and was enumerated in the 1820 census of Smith Co., TN. 

    He married Leodicia Mangum Gwaltney (widow of Elias Gwaltney, who died July 31, 1827 in Smith Co., TN) late in 1830, and they had two children - William Elias Sykes, b. 16 Dec 1831, and daughter Carna F. Sykes, b. abt 1836. 

     143    v.  Anne Sikes, born 1787 in Halifax Co, NC; died ca 1855 in Obion Co, TN.  She married William Nelms; died ca 1851 in Obion Co, TN.

    Ann (Anna) Sykes married William Nelms of Northumberland Co. NC, and first moved to Davidson Co., TN, then to Obion Co., TN in 1821, remaining there until their deaths in the 1850's. Ann and William Nelms had nine children, four of which survived childhood.  One son, Andrew J. Nelms resided in Obion Co., TN after serving in the Civil War.

     144    vi. Rebecca Sikes, born 17 May 1789 in Halifax Co, NC; died in Dade Co, MO.  She married Daniel Waggoner.

    Rebecca Sykes is believed to have married Daniel Waggoner in Davidson Co., TN in 1810, but lived in Smith Co., TN at the time of her father's death in 1823.  It is believed that they later moved to Humphrey's Co., TN, and then to Missouri.

 

     110.  William6 Sikes (Joel5, William4, Walter3, John2, Male1) was born ca 1755 in prob Norfolk Co., VA, and died Bet. 1820 - 1830 in Claiborne, AL ?.  He married ?Simpson?. 

     Norfolk Co., VA titheables list, 1771, 1772, 1773, 1774 - Joel Sikes and sons Joshua and William.

     Moved to Halifax Co, NC abt 1777 with his father Joel Sikes, Sr. and known brothers Joshua, Joel Jr., and James.  Moved to Cumberland Co., NC abt 1787, and appears in the 1790 census as head of a household with 2 males under 16 and 2 females.

     Land records of Cumberland Co, NC indicate that William purchased land there in 1790, and was involved in land transactions until the fall of 1817.   It is reported that he then moved to AL, where he died at Claiborne, AL.  A William Sikes purchased a city lot in Claiborne, AL around 1820, but it is unknown if this is the same William Sikes.

     Legal records associated with William Sikes:

     Cumberland Co., NC Sept 5, 1814  -  Orphan Betsy Strickland, age 9. Bound to William Sykes to learn housekeeping and cause her to be taught to read, write and cypher. 

Child of William Sikes and ?Simpson? is:

     145      i.  Henry7 Sikes, born Bet. 1774 - 1784 in Prob Halifax Co., NC; died 24 Jan 1822 in AL, probably Clarke Co..  He married Threcy Moore 05 Mar 1804 in Cumberland Co, NC; born Bet. 1784 - 1794 in SC?; died in Probably Clarke Co., AL.

       His family moved to Cumberland Co, NC when he was young, as the family of William Sikes appears in the 1790 census records there.  The first census appearance of Henry is in the 1810 Cumberland Co, NC census

     Henry married Threcy Moore, the daughter of Aaron and Ann Moore, on Mar 5, 1804 in Cumberland Co., NC.

     Henry probably  moved from NC to Clarke Co., AL sometime after May of 1816.  It has been reported that Henry died in AL in January of 1822.  In 1823/1824, court records of Clarke Co. AL show that four Sikes brothers were indentured to various families, presumably due to their being orphaned, which would give further credence to Henry's death in 1822, probably along with his wife Threcy.   The boys were Aaron M.  Sikes - age 15, Henry Sikes - age 13, Levi Sikes - age 10, and John R. Sikes - age not given (although he would have been 8 or 9).
