The Sykes Family of
Netherthong and Honley West Riding, Yorkshire, England

Submitted by Laurence Sykes (l-sykes@sbcglobal.net)

Due to the incomplete nature of Church Records in this area of England in the eighteenth century  it is impossible to state with certainty that this family history is 100% accurate. The problem lies in the omission of the mother’s name from most birth and baptism records prior to 1800 and marriage records that do not identify the parents of the bride and groom. However, if certain assumptions and facts are taken into account the probable family line can be determined. The assumption in this case is that the early family members did not stray far from home. The facts are that the principal persons in the lineage are the only people born in the area in the appropriate time frame and that matching signatures of groom and witness on marriage records verify the family.

FIRST GENERATION – probable but not verified:

William SYKES, b. ca 1710, married ca 1733 in Almondbury Parish. There are only three William (Gulielmus) Sykes marriages recorded in Almondbury Parish in the 1730's. All were in May and June, 1733. The first was to Elizabeth Dearnley on May 18, the second to Mary Mellor on May 30 and the third to Lydia Lockwood on June 6.  The marrriage record for all three states that William was a clothier, the woman was a spinster, and that both were "of this parish".  Any one of these (or none if the marriage took place in another parish) could be correct for this family whose children were born between 1736 and 1745.

It should be noted that an Elizabeth Sykes died on May 24, 1735 and three different Mary Sykes died in Dec 1733, Sept 1735 and Apr 1736.  No Lydia Sykes deaths are recorded prior to 1753.  None of the later deaths for other Elizabeths or Marys are in the right village.  Although there is no proof, it seems possible that Lydia Lockwood was the mother of this family.  The baptism record for the following children of William states that he was a clothier living in Netherthong.

 The children were:

+ 1. George SYKES, bap. 3 Feb 1737 at Almondbury

     2. Mary SYKES, bap. 10 Nov 1739 at Honley Chapel
