Obituary -  Arthur Maynard Sikes, Sr.

    Arthur M. Sikes, Sr., 92, born on June 25, 1920, passed away on September 21, 2012.  He was the son of Maynard L. & Ada Pickens Sikes and was a 9th generation Sikes to live his life in Suffield.  Art wore many hats in his lifetime.  He was a WWII veteran and served as an officer in the Submarine service.  In 1943 he graduated from Pratt Institute with an engineering degree.  He was employed at Monsanto Chemical Company as a chemical engineer.  His most enjoyable days were spent with nature-- hiking a mountain, canoeing a river, or cutting a new trail in the woods.  For 60 years he daily maintained the Jesse Fowler Smith Town Forest.  He was active with Boy Scout troop 160.  Always ready for another experience, he traveled to all 50 states, spent 3 winters traveling throughout Mexico, logged lots of miles in Canada, and at 80 years old,  packed his Airstream and drove to the Panama Canal.  Art was a member of the Naturalist club, the Explorers club, and an 80-year member of the National Grange and excelled at bridge.  But the greatest joy of his life was family.  He leaves his wife of 68 years M. Arlene (Austin) Sikes.  He also leaves his children: Arthur M. Sikes, Jr., Austin C. Sikes, Bruce W. Sikes, Thomas P. Sikes, and Joanne Neilson.  How he loved his grandchildren:  Jennifer Harlow, Christopher Sikes, Amanda Moore, Sara Sikes, and William Sikes.  He also leaves his great-grand children: Krycia Harlow, James Harlow, Russell Harlow, and Samuel Sikes.  Arthur was one of 9 children, his siblings are:  Dorothy Underhill, Richard Sikes, David Sikes, Horace Sikes, Jeanne Weise, L. Hamilton  Sikes, Gay Fuller, and Maynard Sikes, Jr.  There will be a memorial service at First Baptist Church, 1217 Hill Street, Suffield, on Sunday September 23, at 2:00.   Donations in Art’s name can be made to Boy Scout Troop 260, c/o Second Baptist Church, 100 N. Main St, Suffield, CT 06078.
