Sherman Dies; Ex-Railroader
J.
Edward Sherman, 71, 1630 Second Ave., was dead on arrival at a
local hospital Wednesday. Death was due to an apparent heart
attack.
Born in
Shenandoah, he had resided 60 years in Council Bluffs. Mr.
Sherman retired in 1961 as chief clerk at the local freight office of
the Union Pacific Railroad. He had served the company more than
50 years.
He was a
member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He also belonged to
Excelsior Lodge 259, AF&AM, and was scheduled to receive a 50-year
membership pin from the lodge in March.
Mr.
Sherman belonged to Unit 30, National Association of Retired and
Veteran Railway Employees, the Council Bluffs News Boys (Old Timers)
Club; Woodmen of the World, and the Union Pacific Old Timers Club.
Mr. and
Mrs. Sherman celebrated their 48th Wedding anniversary Dec. 1, 1965.
Survivors
include: widow, Lillian H.; two sons, Walter E. and Robert E., both of
Council Bluffs; daughter, Mrs.
Irene Mize of Council Bluffs, and
four grandchildren.
Services
will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Meyer
Chapel, with the Rev. W. E.
Wicklund of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Excelsior
Lodge will conduct graveside Masonic services at Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family
suggested memorials may be made to St. John's Church.
John Edward Sherman was a great grandson of
