Obituary - Sarah Laurene Sowers Holt


Sarah (Sara) Laurene Sowers Holt
was born Dec. 24, 1908 on a farm near Randall, Iowa.  She died Sept. 23, 2001 at Bethany Manor,
Story City, Iowa.

Sarah was the 3rd and youngest daughter of Guy and Margaret (Henderson) Sowers.  She lived in or near Randall most of her life, proudly graduating with the Randall School, Class of 1926.  She then attended business college in Des Moines.  While working in Des Moines, she met and married Albert Holt on Feb. 24, 1930.

Sarah worked for J.H. Brekken when he opened the Randall State Bank in 1928, was a bookkeeper for Henderson Furniture Store in Story City, secretary for the Randall Creamery while L.E. Nelson was manager and served as Postmaster of Randall, Iowa from 1963-1973 when she retired.

Sarah was active in the Mr. Olive Cemetery Association for 50 years or more, serving in various capacities including keeping the 'cemetery plot' records.  In 1951 she com- piled a cookbook for the Cemetery Association.

Sarah was active in her children's school lives as a 'Band Booster', member of the PTA and was always ready to chaperone class groups on their trips.  She also served as a Den Mother for Boy Scouts.

Sarah loved and was proud of her family heritage and 'her town'.  She wrote the "Descendants of the Solomon Sowers Clan" and the "History of Randall, Iowa", instilling a love of family history to her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert (Al) Holt; parents, Guy and Margaret (Maggie) Henderson Sowers; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, V.A. and Bessie Sowers Ericson and A.W. and Erma Sowers Orning.

She is survived by her son and wife, Willis (Bill) Holt and Carolyn Johnson Holt; and her daughter, Patricia (Pat) Holt Juon and husband, James (Jim) Juon; her granddaughter, Catherine (Cathy) Juon and husband, David (Dave) Zerweck and their children, Christian and Phillip; her grandson, Steven (Steve) Juon; and granddaughter, Shannon Holt.
